From craftsmanship to global brand

The history and milestones of Kromer

Kromer stands not only for precise and durable Spring Balancers but also for a company history characterized by technical excellence, entrepreneurial resilience, and a clear future vision. What began as a mechanical workshop in the black forest gradually evolved into a global brand known for quality, safety, and innovation. Kromer’s story is more than a sequence of technical achievements — it reflects perseverance, innovation, and entrepreneurial courage. At every stage, the company did more than adapt—it shaped the future. this spirit defines Kromer today — and it will continue to do so.

1868 – 1930

The beginnings – rooted in craftsmanship and vision

Carl and Theodor Kromer founded the company in 1868 in the black forest, a region with a long tradition of watchmaking and fine mechanical precision. Originating in the watchmaking trade, the company soon specialized in high‑quality security locks. This combination of craftsmanship and innovation earned early international recognition — such as an award at the Paris world’s fair for advanced lock mechanics. Shortly thereafter, the first Spring Balancers were developed, made from heavy cast parts with load capacities of up to 60 kg. This marked the beginning of a product segment that still defines the Kromer name today, laying the foundation for a company that remains synonymous with quality, precision, and ingenuity while staying true to its roots.

1939 – 1949

Destruction and new beginnings

World War II left deep scars at Kromer: Over 90 % of the production facilities were destroyed, including machines, buildings, and major parts of the infrastructure. Yet giving up was not an option. With determination, relentless effort, and dedication, employees and management rebuilt — brick by brick, machine by machine. The reconstruction was not just about recovery, but renewal: Production facilities were modernized, processes rethought, and efficiency improved. This period remains a defining chapter in Kromer’s history, symbolizing the resilience and innovative spirit with which the company continues to forge new paths in even the toughest times.

1952 – 1970

Technical breakthrough

In the postwar period, Kromer developed new Spring Balancers with integrated spring‑break protection and was an early adopter of modern materials such as plastics. These innovations made the devices lighter, more efficient, and more durable—establishing kromer as a technical pioneer in force‑relieving tool systems. During this period, the entire spring balancer line was comprehensively redesigned. The targeted use of new plastics allowed device weights to be reduced by up to 60 % without compromising stability or functionality. At the same time, the company made substantial investments in modern production equipment to boost productivity and elevate quality standards—laying the groundwork for its current market position.

1980 – 1995

Safety and quality as guiding principles

Kromer fundamentally revamped its internal testing and quality assurance processes. Investments in advanced testing and measurement technology significantly enhanced product quality, process reliability, and traceability. concurrently, workplace safety standards were raised through optimized manufacturing processes, ergonomic workstations, and clear safety protocols for all employees. This focus produced the patented double‑rope balancer with active fall protection—equipped with two independent load cables that provide maximum security even in the event of a rope break. It set new benchmarks in safety‑critical applications and was recognized as the safest balancer of its class worldwide.

2000 – 2010

The Carl Stahl Group – Growth and renewal

After its acquisition by the internationally active Carl Stahl Group, a leading family-owned company in lifting technology, Kromer entered a phase of vigorous renewal. Both companies shared similar values and goals, creating an ideal foundation for a successful partnership. Significant investments followed, including the construction of a new company and manufacturing facility in gottenheim. Simultaneously, kromer expanded its global sales presence. This internationalization and close integration into the Carl Stahl Group enabled Kromer to reinforce its role as a trusted system partner in industry, automotive, and custom machine construction — and to tap into new markets.

Kromer today

Independent, innovative, and future-oriented

With a fresh visual identity and branding that underscores its autonomy within the Carl Stahl Group, Kromer projects a modern, innovative, and clearly defined profile. Its brand presence reflects its role as a standalone, reliable partner with a strong focus on forward-looking solutions. Sustainability investments reinforce this ethos: a substantial on-site solar installation now supplies most of the energy needs, delivering a balanced CO₂ footprint. Simultaneously, the entire balancer product line has been redesigned with a fresh look and numerous user-centric features. With new variants for ESD and ATEX applications, Kromer purposefully enters future-oriented industries and establishes new standards in quality and functionality.
